The method involves determining a setting torque value, and estimating an indicated average torque in an engine cylinder. A comparison between the setting torque value and the indicated average torque is carried out, and a value of the corrected setting torque is calculated. Quantity of fuel to be injected is determined by a mapping, and the quantity of the fuel to be injected is controlled based on the comparison result between the setting torque value and the indicated average torque.
