The system has a sensor (16) for determining longitudinal speed (V) of a motor vehicle (1), and a control pedal (19) for controlling power activated by a driver. An electronic control unit (10) has a detecting module (11) for detecting racing of an internal combustion engine (8). The detecting module has calculation modules (12, 15) for respectively calculating time derivatives of rotation speed (N) of the engine and longitudinal speed of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting racing an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
