The tool has hydraulic compression and extension units that compress and extend the spring along its longitudinal axis. A preparation console (1) is situated in a motor vehicle assembly plant, and has rear suspension spring positioning units (10), and a hydraulic power supply unit (30) that supplies hydraulic power to the tool. The console has support units with T-shaped tubular supports supporting sliding jaws of the tool. An independent claim is also included for a method of installing a rear Mac pherson suspension spring on a motor vehicle.
