The mechanism has a braking system (7) for front steering wheels (3, 4), and a control unit (18) for controlling the braking system. A torque sensor (15) is exerted on a stationary operating unit (13) e.g. flywheel. The control unit has an input connected to an output of the sensor. A generation module (20) generates a braking set point for the braking system based on the torque exerted on the operating unit, where the set point is sent to the braking system. An independent claim is also included for a steering control method for a vehicle.
