The method involves estimating an instantaneous adherence coefficient of a wheel (11) of a motor vehicle (10) with respect to ground based on values of rotational speed of the wheel, pressure at a brake caliper of the wheel, vertical force transmitted from the wheel on the ground, a flag indicating whether an anti-lock braking system function is active, and an efficiency value of the wheel. Values of the instantaneous adherence coefficient are averaged so as to obtain an estimated adherence coefficient. The value of the estimated adherence coefficient is validated by a set point. An independent claim is also included for a device for estimating an adherence coefficient of a wheel of a motor vehicle with respect to a ground, comprising a logic controller module.
