The method involves obtaining a preferred set of two data packets for which the number of estimated erasures is lower than determined threshold, where the data packets are representative of a set of symbols. The number of erasures is estimated from quality transmission information determined for each data packet to provide the transmission of the packet from an emitter node to a receiver node. A set of symbols are decoded by erasure, from the preferred set of data packets. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a symbol decoding method (2) a computer readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions for performing a symbol decoding method (3) a receiver node comprising a decoding unit for decoding a set of symbols.
