The method involves injecting an inert gas e.g. carbon di-oxide, or fresh air, into a pipe using an injection system after adjusting a mass flowmeter, where the pipe supplies the fresh air into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. Gas analysis is performed in the pipe, another pipe and in an exhaust line, using a gas distributor and a gas analysis bay, for determining mass flow of exhaust gas crossing an exhaust gas recirculation circuit so as to correctly adjust combustion parameters of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring mass flow of exhaust gas crossing an exhaust gas recirculation circuit of an internal combustion engine, comprising a mass flowmeter.
