The method involves determining the exhaust gas mass flow in an exhaust gas line (26a,26b) according to fresh air temperatures (T-1,T-2), exhaust gas temperature (T-3) and exhaust gas temperature of specific thermal capacity. The exhaust gas line is associated to a turbocharger (7a,7b). A fresh air mass flow, measured before a compressor (9a,9b), is determined by an air mass sensor (15a,15b). An independent claim is also included for a control unit for determining the exhaust gas mass flow in an exhaust pipe of a motor vehicle combustion engine.
