The method involves increasing a value of number of swirls (S) in a helical turbulent gas flow with respect to a reference value during cold starting of an engine, when the ambient temperature is less than minus 10 degree Celsius. The value is controlled by a specific throttle valve, during initiation of increase of the value. The valve is closed during clod starting of the engine, when the ambient temperature is less than minus 10 degree Celsius. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a helical turbulent gas flow in a cylinder of an engine.
