The method involves placing a particulate filter in an exhaust gas line of a heat engine functioning along stratified mode cycles (23, 25, 27) and homogeneous mode cycles (24, 26, 28). Combustion of soot is realized in the particulate filter by using heat of the exhaust gas, when the engine is running in the homogeneous cycles. The combustion of the soot is obtained by combining operation phases of the engine in homogeneous cycle with lifting periods of foot of an accelerator pedal.
