Cosmetic use of at least one polypeptide of amino acid sequence encoded by a nucleic acid sequence represented by a sequence comprising SEQ ID No. 1 (having a fully defined 1456 base pairs given in the specification) or its analogue, or fragment, at least one nucleic acid sequence encoding for a polypeptide or at least one agent for modulating the activity, stability or expression of such polypeptide as an agent, for preparing a therapeutic composition for preventing and/or treating the signs of skin aging, is claimed. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for characterization of an epithelium condition comprising determining the epithelium, and a content of a polypeptide or nucleic acid sequence encoding for the polypeptide, in a sample, and comparing the content determined in the determining step with a reference value; and (2) a cosmetic process for characterizing the effectiveness of a cosmetic or therapeutic treatment to be supplied to the signs of skin aging, comprising at least a qualitative or quantitative characterization of the expression and/or biological activity of the polypeptide.
