Cosmetic use of at least one polypeptide of amino acid sequence encoded by a nucleic acid sequence represented by a sequence comprising SEQ ID No. 1 (having a fully defined 1456 base pairs given in the specification) or its analogue, or fragment, at least one nucleic acid sequence encoding for a polypeptide or at least one agent for modulating the activity, stability or expression of such polypeptide as an agent, for preparing a therapeutic composition for preventing and/or treating the signs of skin aging, is claimed. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for characterization of an epithelium condition comprising determining the epithelium, and a content of a polypeptide or nucleic acid sequence encoding for the polypeptide, in a sample, and comparing the content determined in the determining step with a reference value; (2) a process for screening of anti-aging active ingredients comprising contacting at least one cell type capable of expressing the polypeptide with at least one chemical or biological compound to be tested, under conditions favorable to manifestation of the expression of the polypeptide, and determining a content of the polypeptide; and (3) a cosmetic process for characterizing the effectiveness of a cosmetic or therapeutic treatment to be supplied to the signs of skin aging, comprising at least a qualitative or quantitative characterization of the expression and/or biological activity of the polypeptide.
