A fire surround 1 has an illumination strip (28,128, figs 2-5) that locates in a groove (27,127, figs 2-5) in a fame 2 or wall of a recess (3, fig 6), the strip having a series of embedded light emitting diodes (LEDs) (29,129, figs 3-5) that extend along the length of the groove. The LEDs are selectively operable (e.g. from a timer, temperature or light sensor) to provide illumination of the fire surround and a fire. The strip may be transparent, with rectangular cross-section so that it fits flush to the groove, or T cross-section with a continuous peg (41, fig 4) within the groove. The strip may have a wave or wedge shape (44,45, fig 4) to reduce its visibility.
