PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a prism and a prism pair which are capable of increasing the magnification of a luminous flux while reducing polarization-dependent loss.;SOLUTION: By using an incidence angle θi1 of incident light on a first prism 31, an apex angle α of the first prism 31 and a refractive index n of the first prism 31, a magnification m of incident light is expressed by m=[cos(sin-1(sinθi1/n))/cosθi1]×[cos(α+δ-θi1)/cos(α-sin-1(sinθi1/n))]1 wherein δ:θi1+sin-1[(sinα)(n2-sin2α)1/2-sinθi1cosα]-α.
