PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stratified operation control device and a stratified operation control method for a variable compression ratio engine capable of forming an uniform stratified air-fuel mixture having a clear boundary face. PSOLUTION: The stratified operation control device controls the stratified operation of a variable compression ratio engine having a variable compression ratio mechanism adjusting a mechanical compression ratio by changing a top dead center position of a piston. The stratified operation control device includes: a compression ratio adjusting part (S16) increasing the mechanical compression ratio as a target stratified state set according to an engine operational status becomes stronger; a compression stroke injection control part (S18) generating the stratified air-fuel mixture in the target stratified state by injecting fuel from the fuel injection valve disposed to face an engine cylinder at timing where the height of a piston crown face reaches a predetermined position during a compression stroke; and an ignition timing control part (S19) igniting the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinder.
