An internal combustion engine (1) is able to alternate between stratified charge and uniform internal combustion operations. An engine torque reducer (20) reduces torque to lessen change in vehicle behavior. A yaw rate identifier (18) specifies the difference between a vehicle's actually detected yaw rate and a reference yaw rate based on a vehicle's travelling condition. A difference greater than a preset value triggers a torque reduction requirement.
