PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source improved in color unevenness characteristics, and to provide an LCD backlight unit equipped with the same. PSOLUTION: The surface light source, in which pluralities of R, G and B LED elements are arrayed in rows and columns, contains: a first LED array in which two adjacent green LEDs adjacent to each other, one red LED and one blue LED are arranged in turn while being adjacent to the green LEDs; and a second LED array in which two adjacent green LEDs adjacent to each other, one blue LED and one red LED are arranged in turn while being adjacent to the green LEDs. The first and second LED arrays are arranged in an optional row or column, and the first and second LED arrays are arranged such that LEDs surrounding the two green LEDs are red or blue LEDs.
