PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recovering nickel and cobalt by leaching laterite ore, in which iron is not precipitated as the thermodynamically unstable jarosite compound. PSOLUTION: The method for recovering nickel and cobalt from laterite ore by performing atmospheric pressure leaching to the laterite ore includes the processes of: (a) after mining laterite ore, separating the ore into low magnesium-containing ore fraction and high magnesium-containing ore fraction; (b) slurrying the ore fractions separately; (c) performing a primary leaching to the low magnesium-containing ore fraction by using strong sufuric acid; and (d) performing a secondary leaching after the primary leaching, in which iron is precipitated as iron-oxide or iron-hydroxide by introducing the high magnesium-containing slurry, wherein the sulfur acid spouted during precipating the iron is used for leaching the high magnesium ore fraction.
