PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a novel antibacterial agent that is nature-derived and highly safe and does not exert influences on qualities such as tastes, flavors and the like of foods and drinks and the like to which it is added. PSOLUTION: Shellac has been found to exhibit high antibacterial effects on various bacteria by being made water-soluble. The antibacterial composition comprising shellac is effective for sterilization and inhibition of proliferation of bacteria in a product or at a part where the product is used.
