PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably producing a mesophase spherule having small particle size, a carbon material, and a lithium ion secondary battery excellent in all of discharge capacity, rapid charge-discharge properties and cycle properties. PSOLUTION: The method for producing the mesophase spherule comprises a step of heating a mixture of pitch having 1 mass% quinoline-insoluble fraction with particles which consist of a metal, a semimetal or a compound of the metal or the semimetal and have the average particle size of 0.01 m and 1 m. A method for producing the carbon material (A) comprises a step of firing the mesophase spherule. Another method for producing the carbon material (C) comprises a step of sticking carbonized matter of a carbonaceous material (B) to the carbon material (A).
