PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for converting fatty acid and triglyceride into ester by a method which is swift, essentially perfect, economical in cost, and also efficient in operation. PSOLUTION: The process for transesterification of a mixture of fatty acid and triglyceride comprises forming a single phase solution of fatty acid and triglyceride in an alcohol selected from methanol and ethanol, wherein the ratio of the alcohol to triglyceride is 15:1 to 35:1 and further the solution contains a co-solvent in an amount sufficient to form a single phase. After an acid catalyst for ester interchange of fatty acid is added in a first step, the acid catalyst is neutralized, a base catalyst for ester interchange of triglyceride is added, and further, thereafter, the ester is separated from the solution.
