PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic honeycomb base material which exhibits excellent wettability with a wash-coating liquid, withstands a strong vibration or impact, exhibits excellent adhesiveness to a catalyst layer and has an oxide layer excellent in impact peel resistance and drop impact peel resistance and to provide a method for producing the metallic honeycomb base material, and a metallic honeycomb catalytic converter the catalyst layer of which is not peeled off even the strong vibration or impact is caused.;SOLUTION: The metallic honeycomb base material is coated with activated alumina containing 3-10 mass% silica. The surface of the covering layer has 0.3-3.0 μm arithmetic mean roughness Ra and 0.3-26.0 μm mean spacing RSm of the roughness profile irregularities.
