PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power drive capable of attaining fourth- quadrant operation while reducing higher harmonic waves. ;SOLUTION: This electric power drive is provided with a multiphase/non- phase shift transformer having a single common input connected to an induced reactance. A plurality of power cells connected in series are used, each of which is formed for fourth-quadrant operation, has a multiphase input and a single- phase output, and is controllable so as to reduce harmonics in an input power line and an output line respectively. Each of the power cell has a three-phase input converter, a filtering filter, and a single-phase output converter. A method of operating the power drive includes a step of selectively controlling a switching event by the input and the output of each power cell so that the switching event in the power cell may be temporarily separated to reduce a harmonic element. The method is performed using a pulse width modulating controller based on an interdigitated carrier signal controlling the input and output of the respective power cells.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
