PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anisotropic light scattering element with superior viewing angle controllability and capable of thinning a display apparatus.;SOLUTION: This anisotropic light scattering element has anisotropy in the intensity of scattering. For example, as shown in the figure, the element contains: an anisotropic light scattering layer 11 having anisotropy in light scattering intensity depending on the polarizing direction of incident linear polarized light; and a birefringent layer 12 with a phase difference to the light incident from a normal direction of less than 1/10 of wavelength and exhibiting the phase difference to the incident light from the tilted direction from the normal. The scattering layer 11 and the birefringent layer 12 are preferably laminated via an adhesive or a tacky agent layer 13.
