PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital image recording device which improves the quality of a recorded image, the operability, and the convenience by increasing the number of recordable images. SOLUTION: This device has a buffer memory 2 and a memory card 4 for storing images, a compressing circuit 3 which compresses images according to optionally set picture quality parameters, and a picture quality arithmetic circuit 5 which determines the picture quality parameters according to the differences in size from image data compressed by a temporary compressing circuit 3. Source image data and picture quality parameters are stored on the memory card 4; when the free capacity of the memory card 4 becomes insufficient, the source image data which are already stored on the memory card 4 are compressed according to the picture quality parameters and the obtained compressed image data are saved by overwriting to secure the free capacity of the memory card 4 before new source image data are stored.
