PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zirconium-nickel hydrogen storage alloy capable of providing an electrode having a high capacity and being excellent in initial activating characteristics. SOLUTION: A zirconium-nickel surface treatment hydrogen storage alloy is provided with a surface layer made of mainly metallic nickel particles. In a surface method for treating the surface of a zirconium - nickel hydrogen storage alloy, the surface of a zirconium - nickel hydrogen storage alloy is treated with an alkaline solution including a solubilizing agent and a reducer. A hydride electrode is obtained by integrating powder including the zirconium - nickel surface treatment hydrogen storage alloy with a current collector.
