The invention relates to a method and a travelling rest for longitudinal grinding of unsteady parts with bilateral support of the treated surface for the realization of a multipass or deep scheme of treatment. According to the method, the travelling rest (1) is rigidly attached to the body of a circular grinding machine, on a bridge (7) over the longitudinal table, at the time of cutting the piece being relatively mobile in the longitudinal direction towards the support device (1), which is always in a constant position opposite the disc (8). The used manual or automatic mobile travelling rest (1) ensures coaxiality of the surface being grinded with the machine centers line throughout the longitudinal treatment. The device has two jaws (4 and 5), which provide two-sided support of the treated cylindrical surface (2) during each longitudinal working or desparking stroke through two support prisms (3) arranged vertically one against the other on both diametrically opposite sides of the workpiece (2). After each cross feeding of the disc (8) in either end of the treated surface (2), the contact support prisms (3) are moved manually or in a synchronously automatic fashion along vertical guides (6) to touch a precise cut-in grinded step with no radial run-out, and then their position is locked manually by the handles (9) or automatically for running the next working or desparking stroke, so as to carry out the selected cycle of multipass or deep longitudinal grinding.
