Disclosed is a DNA construct comprising a promoter functional in a plant operably linked to a nucleic acid sequence encoding a fusion polypeptide comprising a first enzyme and a second enzyme, wherein the first enzyme is a membrane-bound enzyme and the second enzyme is a soluble enzyme, wherein a product of the first enzyme is a substrate of the second enzyme or wherein a product of the second enzyme is a substrate of the first enzyme, and wherein the fusion polypeptide comprises the enzymatic activity of the first and second enzymes, and wherein the first enzyme and second enzymes are isoflavone synthase and chalcone isomerase. The construct can be used to produce isoflavones in plants.
