The invention relates to a compact laser system which emits short pulses of hundreds of picoseconds. According to the invention, the laser system consists of a laser head assembly which includes a microlaser with microchip oscillator in passive Q-switch range, pumped by a laser diode, the oscillator optical parameters being chosen so as to generate laser pulses of a duration shorter than 500 ps, each generated laser beam being transmitted, through an expander, a semi-wave blade (WP) and an optical insulator, to an amplifier with two passages consisting of a Nd : YAG crystal, placed inside a pumping enclosure, where it is pumped by a flash lamp, at the output from the amplifier, the beam being applied to some non-linear crystals (LBO and BBO) for generating some overtones on the wave lengths 532 nm and 266 nm, respectively, and a driver unit which provides pulses of electric energy to the flash lamp, controls the temperature in the pumping enclosure of the amplifying environment and feeds the pumping laser diode of the laser microchip.
