The invention relates to a gas relay for a power transformer, used as protection which acts upon the occurrence of a fault inside a tank of a transformer. According to the invention, the gas relay is meant to be mounted on a duct connecting a power transformer (TR) and an oil preserver ( C) and it consists of a fixed vertical plane capacitor (C1), with variable capacity, connected to a measuring block (BM1), a gas analyzer (Ag) connected to a chromatograph (CR) and another capacitor (C2) connected to another measuring block (BM2), the measuring blocks (BM1 and BM2) and the chromatograph (CR) being connected to a data acquisition plate (PAD) connected to a central computer (PC) which collects the following parameters: the oil level in transformer, determined by the measuring block (BM1) by measuring the capacity of the capacitor (C1), the chemical composition of the gases discharged, through a chromatograph (CR), from the gas analyzer (Ag) and the gas displacement rate towards the preserver ( C), determined by the measuring block (BM2) by measuring the capacitor capacity (C2).
