The invention refers to a device assembly for defining the empirical effectiveness index in cutting by using an abrasive water jet, meaning the index which uniformly defines the shape of a cut, roughness of the surfaces resulting from cutting and their inclination regarding the impact angle of the abrasive water jet for a specific material. The assembly according to the invention consists of a known machine (1) for cutting by using an abrasive water jet, a thermographic camera (2) and computer (3), while inside the machine (1) there is a workpiece (4) subject of the anticipated cutting process featuring known fixed and variable process cutting parameters (A): hydraulic, cutting, mixing, abrasion and input parameters of the workpiece. The thermographic camera (2) is located in such a way that it records the complete front side (5) of the workpiece (4) cut within a predefined interval as elevation, while in the computer (3) the corresponding software assigns cutting parameters (A) to each thermographic image (6) which are valid for each cutting point (B) and are at the end provided as a table and diagram of the relation between the effectiveness index an one of the parameters (A).
