Screening compounds for their potency as cognitive enhancers of 3-aminopropyl-butyl-phosphinic acid (SGS742) type comprises: administering the compounds to a first group of mice; administering inactivate compound to a second group of mice; performing Morris-water-maze-tests on the mice groups; isolating the hippocampal from mice groups and extracting the protein from it to obtain a hippocampal-protein extract of the mice groups; determining the levels of e.g. (1) L-lactate dehydrogenase chain and (11) aconitate hydratase, in the protein extract; and identifying the compound. Method of screening compounds for their potency as cognitive enhancers of 3-aminopropyl-butyl-phosphinic acid (SGS742) type; comprises administering the screening compounds to a first group of mice; administering inactivate compound to a second group of mice; performing a Morris-water-maze-tests on the first and second mice group; isolating the hippocampal from the first and second mice group and extracting the protein from it to obtain a hippocampal-protein extract of the first and second mice group; determining the levels of (1) L-lactate dehydrogenase chains, (2) calreticulin-precursor, (3) alpha phenolase, (4) 60-kDa heat shock protein (HSP60), (5) 14-3-3 zeta/delta, (6) dihydrolipoyl lysine acetyltransferase-component of pyruvate-dehydrogenase, (7) hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A-synthase, (8) Ras-related protein Rab11B, (9) 1C-tetrahydrofolate-synthase, (10), T-complex protein 1 subunit beta, and (11) aconitate hydratase in hippocampal protein extract of the first and second mice groups; and identifying the screened compound as SGS742 with cognitive enhancer potential when the content of proteins (1)-(7) is increased in the hippocampal protein extract of the first mice group compared with proteins (1)-(7) in the hippocampal protein extract of the second mice group, and when the content of proteins (8)-(11) is reduced hippocampal protein extract of the first mice group compared with the proteins (8)-(11) in the hippocampus protein extract of the second mice group. ACTIVITY : Nootropic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
