A method for the production of plants with suppressed photorespiration and enhanced CO2 fixation comprising introducing into a plant cell, a plant tissue or a plant one or more nucleic acids encoding polypeptides that have the enzymatic activities of (i) glycolate oxidase or glycolate dehydrogenase, (ii) glyoxylate carboligase and (iii) tartronic semialdehyde reductase, where the introduction of one or more nucleic acids results in de novo expression of polypeptides that have the enzymatic activities of (i) glycolate oxidase or glycolate dehydrogenase, (ii) glyoxylate carboligase and (iii) the tartronic reductase semialdehyde and where said polypeptides are located in the chloroplasts of the plant produced.
