An in vitro method to detect non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in a subject or for monitoring the effect of therapy administered to a subject with said condition, which comprises: a) quantifying the level of phosphorylation of Sp1 protein in a tissue sample liver of said subject; b) comparing said level with that of a control sample; wherein an increase in said level relative to the control is indicative of NASH.
