An obturator assembly is provided and generally includes an obturator housingand asupport tube extending distally from the obturator housing. A shield nose isaffixed to a distalend of the support tube. The shield nose defines a truncated cavity and havinga concave centerportion. An obturator member is movably mounted relative to the support tube.A cutting bladeis provided having at least one cutting edge and is affixed to a distal end ofthe obturatormember. The cutting blade is movable within the truncated cavity. The shieldnose has at leastone slot formed through the concave center portion and in communication withthe truncatedcavity for allowing passage of the at least one cutting edge therethrough.
