A gene for rapeseed heat shock protein HSP 17.8 and the use thereof aredisclosed. The nucleotide sequence and the amino acid sequence for the geneare provided. Also provided are the genes from other crops having a sequenceat least 70% homologous to the sequence as shown in SEQ ID NO: 1; andmutants, allelic variants or derivatives thereof having addition,substitution,insertion or deletion of one or more nucleotides. Using model plantArabidopsis thaliana, and by means of transgenic procedure, it isdemonstrated that thermo-tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana under hightemperature is enhanced by over-expressing the gene for heat shock protein inthe plant, resulting in an increase in seed yield under high temperature, andanimprovement in the yield in the Arabidopsis thaliana plant under hightemperature stress. The present invention is useful in the thermo-tolerantcropbreeding program.
