A high-refractive-index compound is provided which has a new type of polymerizability and is useful as an optical material.  Also provided is a holographic recording medium which contains the compound and thereby has a high efficiency of diffraction, high light transmittance, and low degree of shrinkage.  Furthermore provided are: a composition for holographic-recording-layer formation containing a reactive compound represented by formula (1); and a holographic recording material.  The holographic recording medium is characterized by including a recording layer comprising either the composition or the holographic recording material. In formula (1), A is an optionally substituted ring; Ar is optionally substituted (hetero)aryl formed by the fusion of two or more rings; R is hydrogen or methyl; and n is an integer of 1-7; provided that when n is 2 or larger, then the Ar's may be the same or different, and that when A is an aromatic heterocycle and Ar is optionally substituted (hetero)aryl formed by the fusion of two or more rings, then those partial structures of the A and each Ar which are directly bonded to each other in the structure including the A and the Ar bonded thereto contain no heteroatom.)
