The invention relates to applying an intermetallic Me-Sn phase for increasing the durability of unalloyed and low-alloy steels under conditions of metal dusting. It has been demonstrated that such an intermetallic Me-Sn phase (ME = Fe,Ni,Co) on low-alloy steels significantly increases the durability thereof under metal dusting atmospheres at high temperatures. The intermetallic Me-Sn phase can be applied by means of various methods, such as pack diffusion, electrochemical CO deposition, as a paint, or by sputtering with subsequent thermal treatment. The Fe-Sn- or Co-Sn phase can not be applied directly, because tin does not diffuse in iron, cobalt, or ferrites. A nickel layer acts as a mediator.
