The disposal of process and production residuals as well as the recycling of useful components is becoming increasingly important in the iron & steel industry, both for economical and ecological reasons. Conventional recycling techniques have always focused on the recycling of scrap and iron-enriched slags arising within a steel works complex. Current trends in the iron and steel industry, however, are additionally focusing on methods of separation and concentration of non-ferrous components i.e. zinc and lead, from dusts generated at the blast furnace and BOF/EAF sites. Subject paper outlines the activities currently under investigation at VAI (Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbH) and Voest-Alpine Stahl Linz, both of Linz, Austria, with regard to technical methods of separation and concentration of zinc and lead from dusts.
