A technique for detecting the inattentiveness of the driver and the sleepiness thereof by electroencephalography and assisting the driver depending on the driver’s state.An inattentiveness detecting device includes a brain wave detecting unit for detecting a brain wave signal of the driver, a degree-of-arousal estimating unit for holding a first rule used for associating the detected brain wave signal with the degree of arousal of the driver and estimating the degree of arousal according to the brain wave signal and the first rule, an attention distribution estimating unit for holding a second rule used for associating the brain wave signal with the degree of attention distribution and estimating the degree of attention distribution according to the detected brain wave signal and the second rule, a driver’s state estimating unit for holding a third rule used for deriving the degree of attention from the degree of arousal and the attention distribution, estimating the degree of attention of the driver to the driving according to the estimated degree of arousal, the estimated degree of attention distribution, and the third rule, and classifying the driver’s state into a normal state, a low degree-of-attention state, or a low degree-of-arousal state, and an output unit for acting on the driver depending on the result of the classification by the driver’s state classifying unit.
