The positioning device (45) has a patient supporting device (47), on which a patient (49) is supported. A robot arm (51) is provided with multiple movement axes (53,55), with which the patient supporting device is positioned. The positioning device is shifted in a manual operating mode, in which a position of the patient supporting device is changed in a manual manner. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an irradiation device with a particle source for producing particles; and (2) a method for operating a positioning device for positioning a patient in a medical diagnostic or therapy device.
