The present invention relates to a method and a processing time testing device for monitoring the processing time of shipping goods, particularly of postal items, wherein the movements of a shipment are registered and stored in a processing time testing device for future analysis of the course of the shipment, wherein the processing time testing device is equipped with sensors, a GPS receiver, and storage media, wherein the device corresponds largely to the shipping goods to be monitored with regard to dimensions and properties, and wherein the device determines the current type of transportation from the sensor data via a microprocessor. In order to be able to monitor particularly the processing time and modes of transportation of standard letters and similar postal items over a period of several days, the invention provides a method and a processing time testing device, wherein the recipient can be selectively switched on and off for the satellite-assisted positioning system (GPS) as a function of the changing receipt conditions and the current mode of transportation of the shipping goods.
