A distributed Ethernet system comprises a plurality of switches linked in sequence to form a ring structure. Each of the switches periodically performs the ring detection and the protocol machine detection in turn in accordance with a predetermined software configuration after the clock synchronization of the switches, and sends a fault alert message when a ring link fault or a protocol machine fault is found. A method for detecting fault based thereon is also provided.
