A method of characterizing a graded-index multimode optical fiber, the method comprising:a) injecting a light pulse at a predefined wavelength into the core of an optical fiber that is to be characterized, via an "inlet" face thereof, said light pulse being injected with a predefined radial offset from the center of said inlet face;b) detecting said light pulse at an "outlet" face of said optical fiber, the time characteristic of the pulse being modified by propagation along the fiber; andc) repeating steps a) and b) for a plurality of values for said predefined radial offset;the method being characterized in that it further comprises:d) determining the transfer function of the optical fiber and a bandwidth characterizing said transfer function, as a function of said radial offset.;This method can be applied to selecting optical fibers after they have been produced. The invention also provides an optical fiber of the kind that can be fabricated with such a method, and a method of fabricating said optical fiber..
