A programmable AC voltage regulator and stabilizer system, wherein an AC-to-AC converter (35) supplied with the power mains, supplies a variable regulating voltage, obtained by means of a single pair of solid state bidirectional switches (36, 38) which are intermittently closed at high frequency and in a mutually exclusive manner, to a primary winding (44) of a transformer (43) having a secondary (46) in series with the load, the series of the load and the secondary winding being supplied with the power mains voltage, so that the voltage actually applied to the load is equal to the power mains voltage decreased or increased by a voltage corresponding to the variable regulating voltage divided by the primary to secondary turns ratio of said transformer (43), the harmonic current/voltage distortion and the power dissipation introduced by the regulator system being minimized.;The system comprises a supervision unit (28) and a secondary control unit (31) which intelligently cooperate for maximized operational reliability and safety.
