Lighting systems in commercial officebuildings are primary determinants of buildingenergy use. In warmer climates, lighting energy usehas important implications for building cooling loadsas well as those directly associated with illuminationtasks. To research the comparative performance ofconventional and advanced office lighting systems,Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) set up theLighting Flexible Test Facility (LFTF) which allowsside-by-side comparison of lighting options in twootherwise identical 2.7 m x 3.7 m (9' x 12') southfacing offices.The ceiling of the LFTF contains 0.61 m x1.2 m (2' x 4') recessed fluorescent fixtures designedto be easily changed. Differing lighting systems werecomparatively tested against each other over weeklongperiods. Data on power consumption (watts),power quality (power factor), work-plane interiorlighting levels (lux), bulb-wall, fixture and plenumtemperatures were recorded every 15 minutes on amulti-channel data logger. This data allows realisticanalysis of comparative lighting system performanceincluding interactions with daylighting.
