A band AMC sub-channel allocation method in a portable internet system for transiting a normal sub-channel mode into a band AMC sub-channel mode is provided to transit the sub channel to the band AMC sub-channel mode efficiently without overhead. A terminal requests transition of a band AMC mode to a base station(301). The base station requests a channel condition report(302). The terminal transmits a code language to the base station(303). The base station assigns band to the terminal(304). The terminal transmits the signal to interference noise ratio about the five bands to the base station(306). The terminal transmits CQI difference value about five bands which are allocated from the base station(307).
