PURPOSE: A betaine or composition containing the same for promoting liver regeneration are provided to promote recovery to normal liver and growth during regeneration of liver. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition which promotes liver growth contains a betaine of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. The betaine is a betaine anhydride, betaine hydride or pharmaceutically acceptable betaine salt. The composition additionally contains amino acid or glucose. A health food for promoting liver growth contains the betaine as an active ingredient. The daily dose of the pharmaceutical composition is under 2,000 per 1kg.
