A method and an apparatus for determining a transmission antenna are provided to reduce complexity of the minimum pairwise error probability criterion by designing a codebook properly. An apparatus for determining a transmission antenna includes a reception antenna(111), an STBC transmitter(101), and an STBC receiver(113). The STBC transmitter transmits the signal through N transmission antennas(103,105,107,109). The reception antenna receives the signal from N transmission antennas. The STBC receiver determines the index of the transmission antenna with the minimum pairwise error probability based on the distance between the reception signal and the estimated transmission signal. The STBC receiver transmits the index of the transmission antenna to the transmitting terminal through the feedback channel.
