PURPOSE: A geographic information system for generating geographical information on a city using a stereo image and a GPS(Global Positioning System) coordinate, and a geographic information generating method using the same are provided to reduce cost for establishing geographic information on road facilities as an additional expensive measuring equipment is not required for establishing geographic information system. Besides, this invention has an additional advantage of enhancing accuracy of geographic information using object identification.;CONSTITUTION: The position information of a mobile measurement equipment is obtained from a GPS receiver(S510). Accordingly, a stereo image corresponding to the position information is obtained(S520). The stereo image is filtered to extract a characteristic point from the filtered stereo image(S540). The pixel size and the directional information of the extracted characteristic point are measured and converted into a vector coordinate(S550). The vector coordinate of the stereo image and the vector coordinate of an object in a target image are compared, in order to search for an object that matches the object in the target image(S560). Based on the result of the search, an area corresponding to the object in the target image is extracted(S570). Finally, geographic information on the city is obtained by implementing photogrammetry on the corresponding area(S580).;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2010
